Blackboard: Add Course Content & Materials

How to Add Course Content and Materials to Your Blackboard Course Page

To upload your PowerPoint slides, readings, or any course related document, you can use the Item Option.

  • Click Course Content on course menu.

  • Hover your cursor over Build Content and click Item
  • Type a name and an optional description or instructions.

  • You can drag files from your computer to the Attach Files area or use the browse functions. If you select a file you do not want, click Do Not Attach to remove the attachment from the content item.
  • Permit Users to View this Content: If you want students to be able to access this content, select Yes.
  • Track number of views: Select Yes to indicate that you want the system to track the number of times a user accesses this item. Select No to indicate that the number of times this page is accessed will not be tracked. Only use this option when you particularly require tracking information. A general report on Course Reports provides tracking information for the whole course and is available Under the Control Panel/Evaluation link.
  • Select Date and Time Restrictions: You may choose to restrict when this content appears. Check the boxes and determine times and dates as appropriate. Checking Display After means the content will appear from the selected time and date while checking Display Until means the content will no longer appear (will disappear) after the selected date and time.
  • Click on Submit button.

When you hover your cursor over Build Content , different options appear as explained below.

  • An 'Item' is a general piece of content, which can include files, images, text, or links. You can add a description and multiple documents. The following is an example of an item.

  • You can use File to add just one document. After clicking, it can be viewed as a page within the course, or opened in a new window or tab. The following is an example of a file.

  • Audio, Image, and Video allow you to upload audio, image, and video files from your computer in your course.
  • Web Link allows you to add a link to an external website.
  • Course Link enables you to create a shortcut to an existing area, tool, or item in the course.
  • Content Folder allows you to create folders to have better structure and organization of the content items. The following is a screen shot of what a content folder looks like.

  • Blank Page can be used to include files, images, and text together on one page. 
  • Module Page allows you to add modules such as calculator, alerts, or announcements.
  • Mashups enables you to include content from Flickr and YouTube in your course.
  • Tests & Assignments & Turnitin Direct Assignment are used to measure student knowledge and progress. You can create tests and assignments and then deploy them in your course area. When you create an assessment item, a column is automatically created in grade center.

How to Add Links to the Course Menu

To add a menu item, hover your cursor over the plus icon. You will see different options.


  1. Content Area (Folder) allows you to create folders for your course material to present your course content in an organized way.  
  2. Module Page allows you to add modules such as calculator, alerts, or announcements.  
  3. Blank Page can be used to include files, images, and text together on one page.  
  4. Tool Link enables you to create a link to an available tool in the course, such as the Panopto video recording tool, or the Qwickly online attendance tool.  
  5. Web Link allows you to create a link to an external URL to provide quick access to a resource on the Internet.  
  6. Course Link enables you to create a shortcut to an existing area, tool, or item in the course.  
  7. Subheader is a non-clickable header that enables you to show related links in an organized way. 
  8. Divider is a line that visually divides the Course Menu to organize the links on the course menu, so users can find information quickly. You can change its position by dragging and dropping.
